What to Expect When You Hire a Private Chef

From the first enquiry to the last course cleared, here's a realistic picture of how a private chef booking unfolds — so nothing on the night comes as a surprise.

Most people booking a private chef for the first time aren't sure what actually happens between saying yes and sitting down to eat. Do you need to clear out your fridge? Will your kitchen be a mess afterward? How much say do you really get over the menu? These are fair questions, and the honest answer is that a good private chef experience is far less complicated than it sounds — but knowing the shape of it in advance makes the evening easier to enjoy rather than manage.

Before the Chef Arrives

Expect a short planning exchange in the days before the event — usually two or three messages covering guest count, allergies, and any dishes you love or want to avoid. Ingredients are sourced by the chef, not you, so there's no shopping list to manage. The only thing typically asked of the host is confirming kitchen access and roughly what equipment is on hand: a working oven, one clear stretch of counter, and space in the fridge for deliveries arriving that afternoon.

Arrival and Set-Up

A private chef generally arrives two to three hours ahead of the first course, depending on menu complexity. That window covers unpacking, prepping components that need time, and organizing the kitchen for a smooth service. Hosts aren't expected to help or hover — most people use this time to get dressed, greet early guests, or simply relax, which is often the entire point of hiring someone in the first place.

During the Meal

Courses are cooked and plated fresh, timed to the pace of conversation rather than fired out mechanically. For a four-course dinner, expect roughly two to two and a half hours from first course to dessert, with the chef checking in briefly between courses rather than staying at the table. If a dish needs adjusting — spicier, less garlic, a substitution for a guest who arrived with a restriction you didn't mention — that's a normal mid-service request, not an imposition.

Cost and What's Included

A quote covers the chef's time, cooking, and typically the ingredients, quoted as one figure once the menu is finalized rather than billed item by item afterward. What it doesn't usually include is alcohol, specialty rentals like extra glassware, or gratuity, which is left to the host's discretion. Ask for this breakdown up front — a chef confident in their pricing will give you a clear number well before the event, not a vague range.

After the Last Course

Clean-up is part of the service, not an add-on. Expect the chef to wash pots and pans, wipe down surfaces, and leave the kitchen close to how they found it — usually within thirty to forty-five minutes of the final plate. You shouldn't be scrubbing a roasting tray at midnight because the evening ran long; if that's happening, it's worth raising with whoever you booked.
