Booking a private chef for the first time often comes with a handful of unspoken questions. How does the menu actually get decided? What happens in your kitchen versus what's prepared in advance? And how far in advance should you book, especially in a city like Dubai where evenings fill up fast? Here's a clear walkthrough of how it works, from the first message to the last plate cleared.

1. The Initial Enquiry

Every booking starts with the basics: the occasion, guest count, location, and any dietary requirements. Whether it's an intimate dinner for two on Palm Jumeirah or a celebration for twelve in Emirates Hills, this first conversation shapes everything that follows. It typically takes less than 24 hours to receive an initial proposal.

2. Menu Design, Not Menu Selection

Rather than choosing from a fixed catering menu, clients collaborate on a menu built around their preferences, the occasion, and seasonal ingredients. An international, eclectic style means a single evening might move from a Japanese-inspired amuse-bouche to a Levantine main course to a French dessert — shaped entirely around what the client enjoys, not a set formula.

3. Sourcing and Preparation

Ingredients are sourced specifically for the event, with premium proteins, fresh produce, and specialty items brought in based on the final menu. Prep work happens ahead of time wherever possible, so the time spent in a client's kitchen is focused on final cooking, plating, and service — not administrative set-up.

4. On the Day

A private chef typically arrives two to three hours before service to set up, depending on the complexity of the menu. Courses are cooked fresh and plated on-site, timed around the natural rhythm of the evening rather than rushed out course by course. Kitchens are left as they were found — clean, reset, with nothing left behind but the memory of the meal.

5. How Far in Advance to Book

For weekend evenings and peak season (typically November through April in Dubai), booking one to two weeks ahead is recommended. For larger events or specific date requirements — anniversaries, birthdays, entertaining visiting guests — earlier is always better, though last-minute requests are accommodated where possible.
